How to Stay Mindful Throughout Your Day

People have many different perceptions of the word “mindfulness.” For some, it’s an approach, for others, it’s a lifestyle. Some people feel something spiritual when they think of mindfulness. Everyone’s experience with this concept can differ, but in a very practical sense, mindfulness allows you to be more present throughout your daily life. How many times do you become distracted by your phone or a pending to-do list in your head? Staying mindful throughout your day keeps you in the moment and allows you to think more clearly. It’s time to stop and smell the roses.

Try Practicing “Mindfulness” During Something Small

If you’re a high strung person, or if you simply have a lot going on, the idea of transforming into a completely zen person just because you read a blog post is nuts. Don’t worry, this isn’t a complete life transformation. Start with something small. Try to be mindful and present as you brush your teeth, for instance. Think about each tooth as you’re brushing it. Take deep breaths. Don’t start thinking about what’s next, but really stay in the moment. You’re supposed to brush your teeth for two minutes, and if you can be mindful for this period of time, that’s a great start!

Mindfulness Isn’t Just About Intense Focus

You may be thinking to yourself, “Okay, if I’m supposed to pay super close attention all the time, maybe I should just take adderall.” Don’t do that. First of all, it’s technically illegal without a prescription, and secondly, mindfulness isn’t just about hyper focus on the moment. You should also find time to let your mind wander. Give yourself five to ten minutes in the middle of your day to sit with yourself. Don’t start recapping your workload or check your phone, but truly let your mind wander and see where it ends up. In addition to helping you relax, this can also be a great creative exercise.

Don’t Forget to Breathe

A huge part of mindfulness, meditation, and yoga practices centers around focus on the breath. It’s incredible how often you forget about your breath. You may find yourself typing out a long email and realize that you have been holding your breath the entire time. When we get stressed, we tend to shorten our breath or hold it altogether. Don’t forget to check in with yourself every fifteen minutes or so. Are you breathing normally? Are you holding your breath. Try taking three really deep breaths in a row and see what it does for your mental focus and your mood.
