How Do You Stay Positive During A Pandemic?

staying positiveFor most of us, the pandemic is far from over. Many people in our community have been furloughed, and are still trying to find out the best way to navigate the pandemic. Others are trying to find the best ways to keep themselves safe from COVID-19 while returning to work or school. However, we also have to look after our own mental wellbeing. But how do you stay positive during a pandemic? We have a few ideas!

Watch Your Intake

There’s a line between being informed and finding yourself bombarded with bad news, which obviously has a major impact in your mental health. Try to limit your news intake. Find a time of the day when you will listen to a trusted news source, preferably not right before bed. Then give yourself a break!  Also, be willing to enjoy comfort food in the form of a favorite TV show, funny videos online, or find engaging or educational content online. Limiting your intake, and giving yourself a break from the constant barrage of bad news, could help you immensely, while allowing you to still remain informed.

People Have Been Through Worse!

This one may seem odd, but the truth is, humans have faced far more dire situations and have made it through. Often, we’re surprised by our own strength and resilience when faced with seemingly insurmountable odds! Keep in mind that at one time, people faced pandemics without masks or even knowledge of germ theory or basic science (would you rather mask up during the era of COVID-19, or kick around Europe during the Black Plague?). In our own lifetimes, many of us have faced depressions, recessions, war, major weather events, and other calamities. We can weather this, too!

Support a Local Business

Many people are staying home when possible, as social distancing is still one of the best ways to keep ourselves and our families safe. However, if you do desire a meal out for take-out or to-go, or if a local restaurant has opened safely, you can reward yourself and help your community at the same time. Support a local business when possible!

Call or Write

Keep in contact with people! We don’t just mean texting or Facebook messaging. Consider writing a letter, or sending a care package, to someone you love. You can brighten each other’s day!

Take an Inventory

At the end of each day, take time to meditate or think about every good thing that happened that day. You may be surprised to find a list longer than you anticipated!
