Does Cold Brew Give Me the Max Caffeine?

For many people, caffeine is an absolute necessity to get through the day. It’s a productivity enhancer that comes in handy when you need a little extra boost during the day. It can fuel a late-night project marathon when you’ve got to make a deadline. When caffeine is a must, most people turn to coffee. If you’re one of those people, you may be wondering, how do I maximize the caffeine return on my beverage? Cold brew has long been thought of as a super-caffeinated rendition of coffee. But is that really the case? Does cold brew really have more caffeine than a traditionally brewed cup of joe?

Caffeine Concentration Is a Matter of Extraction and Water Ratio

It’s a common misconception that somehow hot brewing coffee removes some of the caffeine concentration. Hot brewing actually speeds up the process of extraction. That’s why you can brew a hot cup of coffee in a few minutes, whereas cold brew usually takes a day or more. It’s not the temperature that makes the difference, but rather the ratio of coffee beans to water. When we make cold brew coffee, we use a very high ratio of beans to coffee. This is what gives our nitro cold brew such a powerful, robust flavor.

You’re Better Off Drinking Coffee for the Flavor

When you make cold brew, you typically brew it very strong and then dilute it with water to make it more palatable. We do prefer a strong brew, but the caffeine in cold brew vs. hot brew (generally speaking) isn’t hugely different. We’re more about drinking coffee for the flavor anyway. In our opinion, you should drink the coffee that tastes best to you! In fact, that’s why we carry so many different bean and roast combinations in our store.
