Keeping Your Home Organized

cleaning your cluttered spacesEven though many states are opening up again, most of us are still working from home and trying to find ways to keep our kids entertained. All this time at home means that clutter and messes can take over your home, and create a lot of unnecessary anxiety. In today’s blog, we have a few simple tips for keeping your home organized and clutter-free!

Where Does Your Clutter Accumulate?

To start, you should divide and conquer the messes in your house. Identify the areas where junk and other items are accumulating. Start by picking up the small discarded items in your house. Then, begin working with the smaller areas first, working your way gradually to the major headaches. The snowball effect helps motivate as you see more and more of the smaller messes vanish, and could give you the push you need to finally tackle the big messes in your house, like your junk drawer or garage.

Deciding What Stays and What Goes

Cleaning isn’t just about finding a place for every little item. After all, if you HAD a place for every item you likely wouldn’t be fighting clutter. If you can locate some plastic tubs, label one “Stay” and another “Go.” Next, as you clear out areas, put what you want to keep in the Stay tubs so you can locate better places for it, and then items you want to throw away or donate can go into the Go tub. Rule of thumb, there should be way more in your GO tub than your Stay one!

Creating Clutter Fighting Habits

First, make a point to complete daily tasks. When the dishwasher stops running, put the dishes away right then. If you don’t have a dishwasher, give yourself another couple minutes to dry dishes and put them away. When the clothes are taken out of the dryer, fold them and put them away right away. Over time, completing these tasks will become routine, and you will limit the messes accumulating in your home. If you have a junk drawer, try to limit what goes into it. Find a separate place for batteries and receipts, for example. Limiting what goes in helps you better organize your kitchen and living room.
