Staying Productive While Working from Home

If you’re new to working from home, it can present both some awesome benefits and potential challenges. With the recent trend of more people starting to work remotely in the interest of public health, it’s important to have a game plan. While working from home comes with plenty of appealing freedoms, it can also become difficult. In this week’s blog, we cover how to stay productive while working from home. If you approach your day and workload with a plan, you’ll be more likely to stay on task and feel good about your schedule.

Eliminate Potential Distractions (Or at Least Limit Them)

It can be difficult to anticipate all of the potential distractions when you work from home, and it’s not always possible. If you’re home with your dog during the day, you may need to schedule some quality couch time with them. It is important to be aware of these potential distractions though, and to try to limit them. Working in a space without distractions, like a secondary bedroom can help. Putting your phone in another room while you put your head down and focus on a particular task is another useful strategy.

Set a Schedule for Yourself and Your Day

You may already do this during your normal working situation, but setting a schedule is crucial when you work at home. At the beginning of the day, take time to write out everything you need to accomplish. Prioritize the list so that you don’t take on too much work. Then, break out a schedule for the day, so you know that you can accomplish everything that needs doing. Having a schedule can allow you to make time for tending to pets, giving yourself a lunch break, or taking short mental health breaks.

Don’t Bring Work Home with You

This is always a goal for any job that you have, but it becomes trickier when you’re already home. How can you compartmentalize your work from your home, when you’re in the same place? This is a matter of self discipline and boundary-setting. If your work day is over at five, it’s over at five. Consider leaving the house to take a walk or run errands when your work day is over to give yourself a clear demarcation. Working from home has its freedoms, but you don’t want to take advantage of yourself!
